Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition
The Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition is Streamer-Preamp-DAC all in one unit priced at 1300€. The unboxing experience is great when you
hold the unit in your hands for the first time, you know that you got something special and i think this should be no surprise considering the price tag.
As for the accessories nothing special here, a basic USB cable, power cord & some documentation.
The DMP-A6 is build like a tank, the chassis is all medal with a beautiful large LCD touch display on the front, Eversolo branding on the left side and
a volume/multifunction knob on the right side which is also used to power the unit on and off and to navigate through the menus.
On the back of the unit there are many connections which gives already a taste on how versatile this unit is. Almost everything is there from WLAN & Bluetooth antennas to Analogue Outputs both XLR and RCA, Digital in and outputs Optical & Coax, Usb for Audio and adding a thumb drive, HDMI output, LAN port.
So there are lot of options here, you can for example add a CD Transport on one of the digital inputs, on the USB OTG port you can add a hard drive with
a music library that will be managed by internal player included in the DMP-A6, if the performance of the excellent internal DAC section equipped with Dual ESS Sabre ES9038Q2M Dacs is not enough no problem you can use one of digital outputs to add an external dac. So a lot of options to further extend the use or upgrade the unit. To complete the connectivity at the rear the terminal for the power cord and the master switch located on the left.
There is also another option to add storage capacity to the DMP-A6, an NVMe SSD slot is located at the bottom of the unit very
practical & easy to install and also more convenient than using the USB port at the back. The SSD can be formatted via the internal setup
and Musical files can be transferred over LAN-WLAN from a local PC or via USB.
As already mentioned above there is a touch LCD on the front, so it can be operated from there but the best way would be to use an IOS/Android device
to control the unit to ensure the best user experience. The Eversolo Control app can be downloaded from respective App stores free of charge.
The App is very good, simple to use and most of the time very responsive. During several months of usage i never encountered serious issues or unexpected shutdowns. It is not as smooth as the Bluesound & Wiim applications but not that far behind and can still improve over time with updates.
The DMP-A6 incorporates popular music services like Amazon Music, TIDAL, Qobuz, HIRESAUDIO. Wireless Music Streaming, TIDAL Connect, DLNA are supported it is also Roon certified and can be used as a Roon endpoint for those who don't like the Eversolo interface and don't want to bother with it. Graphic & Parametric EQ have also been added and can be used with the internal player which gives nearly endless sound tuning options.
Now the most important criteria how does it sound? As it is not a cheap piece of gear it should perform well and actually it does. In a headphone setup and with speakers it feels right at home in both scenarios. With my Wharfedale & Q Acoustic speakers, as a streamer only or streamer & Dac to an integrated amplifier or
Preamp/Streamer/Dac to a Power Amp, performance was great in all scenarios, sound was detailed, well layered and smooth, not sibilant or fatiguing. The best
listening experience was feeding the analogue inputs of the Musical Fidelity A1 into Denton 85 bookshelf speakers as both the A1 and the Denton's lean to
the warmer side the more neutral DMP-A6 helped to keep the balance of the chain. With headphones, i paired with nearly every gear i had on hand and no
disappointments here, it performed well with everything with no exceptions.
Compared to the Standart Edition of the DMP-A6 . Both units are exactly the same in terms of functionality, looks (except for the branding) and connections. The only technical difference is that the master edition has a a femtosecond clock system with ultra-low noise and jitter. To be honest during my listening sessions i could not hear any differences, maybe slightly more controlled in the low end in my speaker system but it could also be a placebo effect it is hard to tell. So regarding the price gap between both units (around 400 EUR) i would probably go for the standard edition.
At the time i placed my order the standard edition was not available and I was granted a significant discount on the MA Edition otherwise i would have waited for a restock. Another quick comparison against the Wiim Ultra revealed that this one is not far behind in terms audio quality for considerably less money. The Eversolo
has the upper hand when it comes to connectivity, built and looks (personal opinion) but the Wiim Ultra has a nice feature that the A6 doesn't have, room correction that can be an advantage in a speaker setup.
Conclusion:
The Eversolo DMP-A6 Master Edition is an expensive piece of hardware, but rewards the owner with great technical performance, gorgeous looks, a lot
of connectivity options and great user experience. If it has the best price to performance ratio that's difficult to answer but i would still recommend it.
