Wiim Ultra Streamer/DAC/Preamp & Headphone Amp

The Wiim Ultra is a compact "Desktop-Size" Streamer with loads of functionality and really excellent sound quality
at a cost of around 399€ in the EU. There are 2 color options available at check out, either silver or dark grey.
The Ultra is a currently the flagship model of the Wiim Streamer Line-up

The Unboxing experience is great, you get the unit itself, a standard power cord
one HDMI cable, an RCA to RCA cable, one coax cable and even a remote.

The built quality of the Ultra is ok it's a mix of plastic and aluminium parts, it is very lightweight, there is a small 3.5-inch colour
touchscreen on the front which is nice, it can display cover art, playback information and even a VU-meter. The multi-function
volume knob is not the best though, it feels very cheap and has a scratchy feeling when turning it, it will improve a bit over
time but it will never be buttery smooth i guess. There is also a 3.5 single ended headphone jack on the front which to my
surprise sounded quiet good but more on that later.

On the back there are tons of connections, 2 analogue RCA inputs, 1 RCA output, a Subwoofer Output, Ethernet, AC Power, USB, SPDIF (TOSLINK), COAX
HDMI ARC & Trigger output. One of the two analogue inputs can also be used to connect turntable with both moving magnet and moving coil options.
In addition to Ethernet the Ultra supports also WLAN connectivity, 2-Way Bluetooth & AirPlay 2

Finally on the bottom there are 4 rubber feet to prevent the unit from sliding around.

Looking at the specifications, the Ultra is equipped with a ESS ES9038 Q2M Sabre Dac-Chip supporting streams up to 24-bit/192kHz resolution
from platforms like Spotify, Amazon Music, TIDAL, QOBUZ and from own music library USB & DLNA. The headphone stage consists of a high quality TI TPAQ6102A2 amp.
On the feature side there is also a lot to mention, the Utra can be controlled with the free Wiim Home App via IOS and Antroid Devices, by the way the
app is fantastic, very easy to use, very responsive and never crashed on me during days, weeks, months of usage.
On top you get a 10-band EQ to customize the sound and Room Correction when using the Unit in a speaker setup.

And i nearly forgot to mention the Ultra is also Roon certified and it can be used as a Roon endpoint.

I tested the Ultra in a desktop setup with headphones and IEM's and in a larger room with speakers.

With headphones i tried it with the internal headphone amplifier and what i can say here is that it worked great with both IEMS & Headphones,
the amplifier has no issues driving all of my IEMS and also most of my headphones, high impedance Sennheiser's HD620s and 660s no problem,
Fiio Ft1 no problem driving it sounded very good, it could even drive both Hifiman Planars the HE1000 SE and HE6 SE V2 which clearly surpirsed
me as lot of amplifiers struggle with the H6, but the Wiim 3.5 headphone output managed to give it enough current so that it sounded
good, not at is best but very good, the only headphone it didn't like was the low impedance DCA Noire X, this one sounded muddy and distorted
at heigh volumes.
The next listening test were using the Wiim as a streaming unit feeding external headphone amplifiers. And also here the results were more than satisfying.
Comparing the Wiim Ultra with it's little brother the Wiim Pro, the gain in sound quality was clearly audible in every regard. The next comparable
Unit in it's path was the Matrix Mini i-4, in my opinion both are equal when it comes to sound in a headphone setup, the last comparison
was with the Eversolo DMP-A6 MA Edition and also here the Ultra surprised me both are very close, the Eversolo is slightly better, clearer, more
textured but the margins are very small here.

In a speaker setup the Wiim Ultra also performes very well, I connected it to the Fosi Audio V3 Class D Mono's and also to the Atoll MA-100 Class AB stereo power amplifier feeding the Q Acoustics Concept 300's and Wharfedale Denton 85's there results were great and even sometimes surprising.
Comparing to the other two contenders, again it is on the same level as the Matrix Mini i-4
and the Eversolo is a bit better. Things change when EQ and Room Correction are brought into the equation. My listening room is not perfect and for the moment
i do not have any room treatments installed so Room Correction software can make significant improvements to the overall sound and here the Ultra surpasses the Mini i-4 as this one doesn't have EQ nor Room Correction. The Eversolo has EQ but no Room correction software and so depending on the speakers i use the Ultra can catch up and even surpass the A6.

Final Word:

At 399€ the Wiim Ultra has a lot to offer, it sounds great with both headphones and in a speaker setup. A great unit to start in this hobby as it has everything
needed to begin with, you can pair it with a wide range of Headphones and IEM's without having an urgent need to invest in a headphone amp and/or external dac
as the unit itself performs very well in all disciplines but still leaving the options open for future upgrades, the app is really well thought out and is updated regularly.
Against the competition i think this is clearly better value than the Matrix mini i4 (699€) as it is way more versatile and comes very close to the Eversolo (1299€). So there is very little to dislike here, if there is something to criticize for me it would be the volume knob and maybe a slightly bigger display but i'm really nitpicking here.....
