Hidizs MK12 In-Ears
The MK12 is a single driver IEM at its core is a 12mm magnesium diaphragm dynamic driver selling at around 160
euros in the EU. Needless to say that there is a lot of competition in the 100 to 200 price range so lets find out
if it can stand out from the crowd. These IEMS can be ordered in 3 different colors (blue, grey and black)
and with two different terminations 3.5 SE & 4.4mm Balanced. Additionally there is an option to purchase
a limited titanium edition of the MK12 at 200 euros.
Unboxing & accessories:
The included accessories are decent and you get actually a lot. Multiple tips and different tuning nozzles,
a stock cable which is on the thinner side and a carrying pouch that feels more functional than luxurious and
last but not least the IEMS themselves. Considering the asking price the package is fine.
Design, Comfort & Build Quality:
Build quality is excellent. The CNC-machined aluminum shells feel premium, with an aggressive industrial design.
Comfort for me is above average and with the provided tips you should be able to get a decent fit. As
already mentioned above the cable is a bit thin for my taste but it doesn't tangle that easy and no issues
with microphonics which is the most important.
Power Requirements & Pairing:
Very easy to drive, had no issues at all they can be fairly driven with a basic dongle or a small DAP like
the AP80 Pro Max also from Hidizs, a great duo and small portable setup for ultra portability.
Sound Impressions & Comparison:
A great feature that comes with the MK12 are the different tuning nozzles that can slightly alter the sound.
The red nozzle leans warmer and bassier, the silver nozzle lifts the upper mids and treble for more clarity, while
the balanced option sits somewhere in between. Out of the bunch I ended up preferring the balanced gold nozzles,
for a good amount of energy and detail while still a having a satisfying low end performance.
Where the MK12 really shines is atmosphere. The soundstage is unusually wide for a single dynamic driver
especially for the price, creating a spacious concert like experience, with most of the time very good separation
of instruments and vocals, noted that on very busy tracks can become congested when multiple instruments compete
in the lower frequencies. Detail retrieval is a good but not outstanding with the MK12's. The bass digs deep
with excellent sub-bass extension, but the emphasis is more on fullness and impact than razor-sharp speed.
Altogether its a well tuned IEM which is slightly on the warmer side and delivers a very enjoyable non fatiguing
listening experience.
Comparison 1: The Meze Alba IEMS's similarly priced with single DD, i find the ALBA's to be slightly more detailed
with nice soundstage but not quiet as extended as on the MK12, i like the bass more on the MK12 it has more impact
& rumble but is slower compared to the Alba's. It's a close call but if i would have to pick a winner it
would be the Mk12 but both are great options for the price however i would rank both as an solid A.
Comparison 2: The Hidizs MP145 (159€) also has a single driver but this time it's a planar magnetic. The MP145 is brighter, crisper
and more technical. The bass is thinner but quicker compared to the MK12. In terms of soundstage and musicality
the Mk12 has a slight edge over the MP145, i think that these two IEMS are more complementary to each other than
in direct competition, i see both of them in the same tier.
Comparison 3: Letshuoer S12 Ultra (169€) is an newer single planar driver IEM, it has a more similar sound signature
to the MP145 than the MK12 but it is more refined and even more technical than both of these IEMS and to me it is
considered to be a tier above.
Conclusion:
Overall the Hidizs MK12 is a solid IEM for those who like a warmer tuning and with a slightly elevated bass
presentation so if you want a rich, wide, emotionally engaging single-DD experience with genuinely useful tuning
customization, the MK12 is a compelling set and a worthy consideration.
